Probing mechanistic models for the retinogeniculate circuit in cat using drifting gratings
نویسندگان
چکیده
Experiments with drifting gratings are widespread in the study of neurons in the retina and dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (dLGN). As an alternative to descriptive modeling based on the di!erence-of-Gaussians model, we show how mechanistic models for the retinogeniculate circuitry can be tested against drifting-grating data. As an example of this approach we (i) derive mechanistic expressions for the geniculate contrast gain for X-type relay cells in dLGN for a set of models with direct feedforward excitation and feedforward inhibition via intrageniculate interneurons, and (ii) compare the expressions with example data from the literature. 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. Probing the retino-geniculate circuit in cat using circular spot stimuli
Spatial receptive "elds of relay cells in the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (dLGN) have commonly been modeled as a di!erence-of-Gaussians. Recently, we presented an alternative receptive-"eld model which incorporates the known functional couplings between retina and dLGN. The model gave good "ts to recently published experimental data on responses to circular spot stimuli. Moreover, predict...
متن کاملMechanistic modeling of the retinogeniculate circuit in cat
An early version of a biologically realistic spike-based model for the X-on pathway of the retinogeniculate circuit is presented. The model comprises feed-forward retinal connections to the lateral geniculate nucleus as well as intrageniculate inhibitory actions from dendrodendritic structures (triads) and axonal output of interneurons. Neurons are modeled as leaky integrate-and-fire-or-burst n...
متن کاملNeurons in cat V1 show significant clustering by degree of tuning.
Neighboring neurons in cat primary visual cortex (V1) have similar preferred orientation, direction, and spatial frequency. How diverse is their degree of tuning for these properties? To address this, we used single-tetrode recordings to simultaneously isolate multiple cells at single recording sites and record their responses to flashed and drifting gratings of multiple orientations, spatial f...
متن کاملNonlinear Y-Like Receptive Fields in the Early Visual Cortex: An Intermediate Stage for Building Cue-Invariant Receptive Fields from Subcortical Y Cells.
Many of the neurons in early visual cortex are selective for the orientation of boundaries defined by first-order cues (luminance) as well as second-order cues (contrast, texture). The neural circuit mechanism underlying this selectivity is still unclear, but some studies have proposed that it emerges from spatial nonlinearities of subcortical Y cells. To understand how inputs from the Y-cell p...
متن کاملVisual Experience before Eye-Opening and the Development of the Retinogeniculate Pathway
Visual experience before eye-opening is not usually thought to have any developmental significance. Here we show that naturalistic visual stimuli presented through unopened eyelids robustly activate neurons in the ferret dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus. Further, dark-rearing prior to natural eye-opening has striking effects upon geniculate physiology. Receptive field maps after dark-rearing s...
